You and I must be on the same travel trail! I went up to Alaska three years ago for a sea kayak tour in bear country. We saw black bears with their cubs eating barnacles in the intertidal zone - it sounded like eating gravel - their poor teeth! Another day we watched brown bears grazing on grass in a river. Both times we could approach within 10 feet without disturbing the bears. Something about the kayaks made them completely unconcerned even though they could smell us.
